Costume Help Please?
[info]kwsapphire wrote in [info]city_of_heroes

I am trying to create a character based on Buccaneer Bruce to take over my Buccaneers villain group when Spirit is redeemed. I was excited when I saw the ninja robe because I thought (along with the sleeves) it would make a great Buccaneer costume. But now I'm starting to think that without an actual swashbuckler hat, I won't be able to pull it off.

I tried using the existing pirate hats, and they really don't convey the look I want. So I tried the wide brimmed hat that came with the magic pack, and the bandanna (which is what Spirit wears). What do you guys think? Does anyone have any suggestions?

Edit: Much thanks to [info]fredchook for the great suggestions!

does anyone know anything about google chrome OS and how it relates to apps and CoH?
I figured most people ran XP or a 64 bit OS. Is there any room for another OS in the bloated and cash strapped market? is it just for little netbooks?

As an aside to this, if I wanted to dual boot a linux OS to run CoH if possible, which one is best? I am itching to try something new on my modded acer, which is slowed quite a bit by vista.

edit: this blog answered some questions.

So today I should buy the Martial Arts micro-booster. It took me 7 tries to get their very similar looking letters right. And of course for each try I had to fill in my credit card number again, and expiry year and month, and the extra 3 digits. Luckily it did remember my name and address, or I would probably have given up. It would probably have taken me less time to open an account with a competitor - if they had any competitors with ninjas.

And it still does not keep the spammers away. Because spammers are humans too, only with lower wages.

Mount Auburn Hospital item pickup
[info]sweetmmeblue
I left something at my doc's office at Mount Auburn and I'm there rarely, (only for appointments). Is there anyone who will be there who could pick up what I left and then we'll arrange a more convenient place for hand off? This has to be done during the week when the office is open (9a-4p).

Thanks!

Research thoughts
[info]sweetmmeblue
Trying to find research in professional peer reviewed journals on couples or relationship counseling for the LGBT community is frelling hard. An article in 1997 looking back 20 years at the major publications found 0%-.06% of the articles printed were about LGBT relationships or had a portion of the article addressing LGBT issues. Actually "T" issues weren't even there, this was just LG and sometimes B too. It seems that in the last 10 years not much has changed.

More books have been written but these are not peer reviewed journals nor are they written with "Evidence Based Practice" models in mind except for chapters in textbooks used for grad students and maybe undergrad students. I don't remember my family therapy book having a chapter on it (though that I can check later).

This concludes my research thoughts.

Adding a DVD CE code to a GvE account
[info]auroraniteshade wrote in [info]city_of_heroes
I checked the other tags for trials/gamecodes but didn't find any related to upgrading in this particular direction, so I want to double check. My b/f has the GvE edition of the game. For his birthday, I recently was able to find a new, sealed City of Heroes DVD Collector's Edition so I could get him Prestige Power Slide because he mentioned he'd really like that someday. I got the game, sent it to a mutual friend of ours in the US (I live in Europe and he lives in Canada and the shipper only shipped within the continental US) and I want to give him the code so he can upgrade his account ASAP to play with the shinies, then our friend will ship him the box.

Do we have to open a ticket with support to add the DVD CE to his GvE account or will using the "Upgrade Account" and adding the serial code in his NC Master Account be enough? I have repeatedly stressed to him not to click "Add Game" because I'm fairly sure that would create a separate account for him. I want to know ahead of time though if we have to open a support ticket or not though, cuz I don't want to accidentally waste the code or something.

Thanks in advance for advice! I'm really hoping to get this to him soon because the first time I went to buy him a DVD CE edition, the seller claimed it was guaranteed to work etc etc and we received the box with an already used code -_- So he couldn't use that at all and I've had to wait a few months checking ebay for a new one.

Additions and improvements for Paid Feature
[info]marta wrote in [info]paidmembers
We've made some additions and improvements to Notes!

The Notes feature has been added to two action-taking pages:
  • You can now add a Note directly on the Add a friend page - handy if you'd like to mark down where you met them or another name you know them by!
  • On the Ban and unban users page (under Account -> Privacy) you can now add a Note, including to a group of users all banned at the same time (so that next year you won't need to ask yourself "hey, why did I ban these guys?")

Other changes:
  • When you're viewing your existing Notes they're grayed out; click in a field to activate it to change the text (this page can be found from the header by using Profile -> Manage Notes)
  • Changes to editing:
    • When you're going to create a new Note but one already exists, you'll get a warning that you're editing an existing Note
    • You can now delete a note from the "Edit note" pop-up in the hover menu
    • You can now delete notes for multiple selected users on the Manage notes page
    • When you change Notes on "Ban|unban users" page, they can be edited and saved with "Save Changes" button

fiscally conscious
[info]bittibuddha
a little over a year ago is when the financial crisis was just becoming a reality. For me, there were equal parts of terrified panic and a strange sense of elation that came with the idea of MakeDo&Mending our way through our own Private Recession. I (ironically) bought books on how to eat cheap and grow my own vegetables. I stopped taking folks to dinner and having my nails done and scaled back my normal day-to-day spending by 75%. I even waited-tables through my summer vacation so that it was a monetary wash (almost).  So, despite the fear of the unknown, there as a certain pleasure that came from watching the trendline of monthly expenditures dive sharply downward on my budget worksheet.

Now? a year later? the expense trendline isn't diving down anymore. Its plodding along at fairly horizontal line much lower than it once was. There have been 12 months to adjust to the new reality of decreased income from paycuts and new educational expenses to the budget. I look askance into 2010 and realize that things may not change for another year. This may be only the midpoint to this cycle - it may not get much better for a while. Last year's winter of panic may be replaced with this year's winter of quiet despair.  In any case: christmas will be lean again. Summer vacation plans are not set in stone. All expenses are being looked at critically.  I know many have it far worse off - I just wish, for all our sakes, we could see the light at the end of the tunnel and not worry about an impending impact.

Now diagnosed
[info]teamnoir
I don't have the paperwork yet, but I was assessed yesterday and diagnosed as Aspergers. It's official now.

For anyone keeping count, the only reason I need the formal dx is to support a disability discrimination case at work. (More on this is previous posts).

It is easier to generate compassion while visualizing a sentient being who is ver destitue, but we need also to reflect on persons who do not seem to be suffering at all, but who are in truth acting in ways that will eventually bring about manifest suffering.

Drink garnish close-out
[info]elkor
Thanks to everyone that posted their idea of the best garnish for a bourbon and coke.

To repeat, the default is to not have a garnish at all, and this was an exercise on what fruit, if you had to have one would work the best.

Chery and/or Orange were the most popular suggestions, with Starfruit and Durian being the more esoteric ideas.

Two people happen upon the ideas that we came up with at the time, being the Bosc Pear and an apple.

Though the type of apple is very important, as there is a huge flavor difference between a Granny Smith and a Red Delicious.

The variant we came up with at the Happy Hour would be an apple with a more balanced flavor profile, so it would complement rather than skew the taste of the bourbon and coke. I'm thinking either a Mutsu or Jana Gold. I think that, after soaking in the bourbon and coke for a while, the apple will pick up a good flavor, enhancing its original taste.
