Love, mucous and the holy trinity of Prog Rock
[info]stephenray
What a lovely weekend. Ani and I had our Christmas since we won't be seeing each other over the holidays. Both of us have raging colds (mine has been hanging on for 3 weeks) so it was lots of nose blowing, laughing, coughing and listening to her talk with a voice like Nick Nolte/Marge Simpson. Fun!

She gave me a gift that's going to keep on giving for years to come. The Genesis 1970-1975 remastered boxed set. What? Genesis? You mean like "I Can't Dance?" or "Invisible Touch?"

NO.

I mean GENESIS. I don't know what that other band is called (the phil collins project or something? I dunno)

Yeah see, that's my Genesis. They were the apex of the prog rock holy trinity for me flanked by Yes and King Crimson. Each band has it's merits, but Genesis was my D&D music, my pot music, my youth. However, if King Crimson does a 5.1 remastered boxed set, I'll just "jizz in my pants" as they say.

This boxed set is AMAZING. 5 albums remastered in Dolby 5.1 surround sound. These recordings were digitally cleaned with a fine shammy. All the hiss from ancient analog has been removed leaving the music in sparkling condition. The mixes themselves were left fairly unaltered save for spreading them into 5 channels and blessing it with modern day equalization. Its absolutely stunning.

The early Genesis recordings suffered from flat production that I felt never did their live sound justice. That has been FIXED. So, I've got Trespass, Nursery Cryme, Foxtrot, Selling England by the Pound and The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. Each disc has lengthy interviews with the band about the specific album as well as some live rarities.

My eyes got moist on the first notes from the song "Dusk," and stayed that way while we listened to many selections. I waved my arms about like a chimp and yammered in some old stoner lingo. I dunno what I said. It's just so beautiful to hear this music in such condition. It's like it's all brand new again. It's magic.

Thank you Ani, this is so much more than a Christmas present.

<3

and thank YOU for introducing me to it. Like I said: it was like getting to see the Grand Canyon for the first time. I glimpsed a whole new vista I never knew existed before. You're the one who keeps making my brain go squish, baby. thank you. <3

well ya gotta have good brains to accept decent input :)

oooohhh, that's my Genesis too! *drool *drool

That is an AWESOME Christmas gift!

Such wonderful music...I can hear it now...makes my heart melt.

Glad you had a good time and I hope both of you are feeling better soon!

They really do sound amazing. It's like they're brand new.

Cool present. Sorry you both are sick ... glad you had a good time together ;)

actually the colds seemed to add an element of fun and whimsy to the weekend!

Very cool! Thanks for the review.

Is there any truth to the rumor that Gabriel will be re-joining Genesis for "something?" It's not a total reunion (although I heard Steve Hackett is more than willing), but... hey....

- James -

My pleasure! I was listening to more last night. I can't beleive that there's so much stuff in this I've never heard before. Lots of little parts everywhere... aauugh

When they all got together for these remixes, there was some talk about doing "something" together. It seemed that everyone was willing, but I don't think anything ever came of it due to scheduling and publishing problems... sadly.

It might have been nice, but it probably would have just been awkward.

I love your love for music. ;-)

And I love your love for my love of music :)

Glad you two had such a lovely weekend! It's so nice to see you happy :)

And even nicer to see you excited about music again :)

Yeah, you'll have to come over for a listening session or two :)

I'd love to! :)

What are you doing posting during the day? Did you figure a way around the LJ block or are you playing hookey again? :P

Oh, Lj recently came up unblocked for some reason. I dunno.

I wasn't playing hookey, I was sick! :P

I'd have to nit-pick on your arrangement of the prog trinity. I am an unrepentant Yes fan (sue me). I always thought they were more individually talented.

I was somewhat late to Genesis - didn't really listen to anything before Selling England. Then Gabriel left and it was all.. meh, who cares anymore.

Glad you found something this wonderful, too!

I love Yes. I even liked Tormato :)

Yes were definately the better players. King Crimson too for that matter. Genesis had a pastoral gentleness and fairy tale quality that I always loved. That's the great thing about the trinity, they were 3 very different bands.

Yes had the math, King Crimson had the chaos and Genesis had the gnomes. Heh.

Genesis were probably the least technically skilled out of all of them. But they had Peter and he offered that great voice and writing which sort of wrapped them up quite nicely. They had a knack for taking you on a little journey and telling a story.

Yes has some remastered Dolby albums as well, but they're sort of tarnished by heavy handed mixing and the addition of modern effects. They changed it a bit too much IMO. Still great to hear though.

Yeah, there's none of the newer remastered Yes that really sounds like I remember them sounding.

Crimson certainly had the chaos - I was never enough of a jazz fan to really appreciate them.

AGH! This is something I need to put on a list to get for Jeremy sometime! I would know nothing of early Genesis without him.

Yay for you guys! :P

It's fabulous. There's stereo remasters on CD as well as the surround sound ones which are on DVD. In case you dont have a dolby system, the set comes with both stereo and 5.1 mixes.

The stereo mixes are great too.
